But with my other car this time, enjoy the beater '44!

What is that an 84 GL? Love those GL rims regardless

'85 actually. Got the B230F in it.

Swapped? I posted my mint green 244 GL in oppo two weeks ago. It has a B23E high compression motor, standard in Canada in '81

Nope, 85-87 in the US got the B230F, which is the 'weaker' one with the thinner conn rods. But not gonna be an issue in this build.

Ah didn't know that. What a weird year.
My girlfriend just totalled her silver '88 244 w/M47 last weekend, so we are back on the hunt for one of these with a stick. Near impossible. :(

Having the AW70 actually doesn't bother me, it's the daily driver so it's a nice break. I can't wait to get it truly road worthy.

My iPhone and kinja don't play together nice. Is that a red 940 wagon to you too?
Anyway, my '81 GL has the BW55 three speed snooze-o-magic and I am fully intending to swap it to the M46 from my parts car. If it had the AW70 (which they changed to in '82) I would probably happily keep it however, I drive through downtown for work so the automatic is nice, but for highway cruising its a pig on fuel, and because it is high compression it far prefers the expensive stuff.

Yes it is a 940 wagon, and this is my first Volvo, so I don't know a whole lot about the other models, but I'm hoping to not have to swap anything major for a decent while in this one. So far I've replaced every oil seal on the engine, all the belts, water pump, radiator hoses, motor mounts, and the oil pump o-rings. Next on the list is brakes the whole way around, then figure out why my diff is howling like a monkey, and replace some electrical components that stopped working, like the headlight switch and relay. But once that's done it should be road worth and a daily driver that will last me a while with minimal headache.
I've decided to just ignore the rust and let it go until it finds it's way to the scrapyard.

Good stuff, sounds like you have been busy!
The only thing to really be aware of is that the insulation on the wiring harness likes to corrode in the '83-87 models. Failure rate is like 90% or something. As for the rear diff, they often howl a little bit, but shouldn't too much. Check the driveshaft rubber donut bushing while you're at it, since they often like to get noisy.

Sweet, good to know about the diff. The engine bay wiring harness is coming out one day and I'm gonna retrace it all with new wires.
